Your XD has plenty of barrel to have the bullet fully expand. They are made to expand at velocities pistols generate. At extremely long range it might not open fully but a compact pistol like the XD is made to carry and hopefully you'll never need to use it to defend yourself, but if you do the shots will be at close range. The expansion and stopping power will be quite adequate.
